Meridian Lawyer Rankings · Methodology · Edition 2 (October 2026)
The Meridian Lawyer Index
How Meridian ranks lawyers on African transactions and disputes: a single published formula, applied identically to every lawyer, in which every point traces to a named role on a dated, sourced matter.
Design principles
What the index is built on
- Evidence of mandates, not reputation. Only named roles on recorded matters score. Directory bands, awards, peer votes and self-description are recorded as context and never scored, following the credit rules used by the major deal league tables.
- Transparency. Every weight is published here; every point on a profile can be traced to a matter and its source, in line with established practice for composite indicators: explicit weights, normalisation, sensitivity to outliers and published tie-breaks.
- Proportion, not size worship. Deal value is log-scaled and capped so that one megadeal cannot outweigh a sustained record.
- Time-bound. A fixed evidence window with recency weighting, so the ranking measures current activity.
- Confidence-weighted. Primary-source evidence counts in full; weaker evidence counts less, and undated evidence is shown but not scored.
- Independence. No fees, sponsorship or commercial relationship can affect a score.
The formula
From matter to index
Matter points (MP) = Base × Size × Cross-border
Lawyer credit = MP × Role × Evidence × Recency
Score = (sum of the lawyer’s eight highest credits) × Breadth
Index = 100 × Score ÷ highest Score in the edition
1. Base
| Matter type | Base |
|---|---|
| Transaction or financing signed, priced, announced or completed | 10 |
| Judgment, award or order obtained | 10 |
| Regulatory or advisory mandate without a transaction | 7.5 |
| Pending dispute (claim filed, hearing or trial pending) | 6 |
2. Size (log-scaled)
Size = 1 + 0.25 × log10(value in US$ millions), bounded between 1.0 and 2.0. Undisclosed values score 1.0. Examples: US$10m = 1.25; US$100m = 1.50; US$1bn = 1.75; US$10bn and above = 2.0. Values in other currencies are converted at an approximate rate for the transaction period.
3. Cross-border
| Jurisdictions on the matter | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| One | 1.00 |
| Two (or one plus a multi-jurisdictional element) | 1.15 |
| Three or more | 1.25 |
4. Role
| Role on the matter, as named in the evidence | Weight |
|---|---|
| Lead partner or lead counsel | 1.00 |
| Partner, director, head or senior advocate (not stated as lead) | 0.75 |
| Counsel, senior or managing associate | 0.55 |
| Associate or trainee | 0.40 |
| Named, title or role not stated | 0.50 |
5. Evidence quality
| Evidence | Weight |
|---|---|
| Primary source naming the lawyer: firm announcement, court or tribunal record, regulator, prospectus | 1.00 |
| Reputable secondary source, or a record marked partially verified | 0.85 |
| Firm submission or directory-derived record not yet independently confirmed | 0.60 |
6. Recency
The Edition 2 evidence window runs from 1 October 2024 to 3 October 2026. Matters dated in the final 12 months count in full (1.00); matters in the first 12 months count at 0.70. Matters with a year but no day are treated as falling mid-year. Undated matters are listed on profiles but not scored.
7. Breadth
Breadth = 1 + 0.05 for each additional practice area + 0.05 for each additional jurisdiction across scored matters, capped at 1.20. Only the eight highest-scoring matters count towards the raw score, so volume alone cannot buy rank.
8. Ranking, tiers and ties
Lawyers are ranked overall and placed in one of seven tiers by overall position: Rainmakers (1 to 10); Power Players (11 to 25); Dealmakers (26 to 50); Operators (51 to 100); then, beyond 100, Established (partners, heads and senior lawyers), Rising (associates) or On Watch, where the evidence does not state a title. Ties are broken by the number of scored matters, then aggregate disclosed value, then the most recent matter date, then alphabetically. A lawyer needs at least one scored matter to be ranked.
Worked example
One matter, three lawyers
A US$250m cross-border financing (two jurisdictions), dated within the last 12 months, evidenced by the firm’s own announcement:
| Lead partner | Senior associate | Associate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matter points | 10 × 1.60 × 1.15 = 18.4 | 18.4 | 18.4 |
| × Role | 1.00 | 0.55 | 0.40 |
| × Evidence × Recency | 1.00 × 1.00 | 1.00 × 1.00 | 1.00 × 1.00 |
| Credit | 18.4 | 10.1 | 7.4 |
Data standard
How the underlying record is built
- Coverage is built country by country across Africa’s 54 states, starting with each market’s leading firms and their verifiable transactions.
- Every record carries a unique ID, standardised fields (jurisdiction, currency, sector, practice area), the firm’s role, named lawyers and roles where published, and a source.
- Primary sources are preferred: deal announcements by companies, exchanges and regulators, court records, offer documents and firms’ own published deal records. Reputable financial and legal press is used to corroborate.
- Fields that cannot be sourced are left blank and the record is marked partially verified. Nothing is inferred: a firm is credited only where it is named as counsel.
- Directory and award recognition is stored as context for firm profiles and never contributes to a score.
Firms and lawyers can submit matters or request corrections. Every change is verified before it counts. Submission does not guarantee inclusion.
