Dangote buys 25% of Kenya Pipeline Company for about US$327m

A KSh42.5bn block of about 4.5 billion shares on the Nairobi Securities Exchange gives Dangote a quarter of the pipeline network that moves East Africa’s fuel.

Aliko Dangote has acquired 25% of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC). He disclosed the purchase at an event in London on 21 October 2026, after the Nairobi Securities Exchange reported a block trade of about 4.5 billion shares for KSh42.5bn (about US$327.4m). Dangote has not said which of his companies holds the stake. “We bought 25% of their pipeline network for the distribution of petroleum products,” he said.

KPC runs about 1,342km of pipeline with annual capacity of around 14 billion litres, serving Kenya and neighbouring markets. The Kenyan government, previously its sole owner, sold 65% of the company in an IPO earlier in 2026. Published reports do not name the seller of the block or any advisers.

The wider position

The purchase adds a distribution asset to Dangote’s growing East African footprint. In September Kenya said it would take an equity stake, through its National Infrastructure Fund, in the Dangote refinery planned for Lamu, a project put at KSh2.2 trillion (about US$16bn). East African investors have also been offered almost 20% of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO through depositary receipts in Nairobi.

The open questions for counsel are competition review of a refiner holding a significant stake in a common-carrier pipeline, and whether the stake brings board representation.
