White & Case advises A.P. Moller Capital on Portek acquisition

The firm’s multi-office team, including Johannesburg partner Sandile Mathebula, advised on the purchase of the terminal operator, which runs ports in Algeria and Gabon, from Mitsui & Co.

White & Case has advised A.P. Moller Capital on its acquisition of Portek International from Mitsui & Co. The value has not been disclosed.

The deal

Portek, headquartered in Singapore, is a multipurpose terminal operator and port-engineering business with terminals in Algeria and Gabon among its operations. A.P. Moller Capital manages infrastructure funds focused on emerging markets, including Africa. The firm announced the deal on 16 October 2026.

The team

The deal was led by partners Ken Barry (London) and Fraser Galloway (Abu Dhabi), with partners in Singapore, Johannesburg (Sandile Mathebula), Paris, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and associates across seven offices. Counsel to Mitsui was not named in the release.

Why it matters

African port concessions are increasingly changing hands at portfolio level rather than one terminal at a time. For counsel, that means concession-change-of-control reviews in several jurisdictions inside a single M&A timetable.
