Liberia’s largest post-war foreign investor quadrupled in size: the US$1.8bn expansion delivered a new concentrator at Tokadeh (Nimba County), upgrades to the Tokadeh–Buchanan rail corridor, a new berth at Buchanan port and two power plants, lifting iron-ore shipments from historic ~5Mtpa toward 20Mtpa in 2026, with feasibility work for 30Mtpa. In January 2026 Liberia’s legislature ratified a third MDA amendment extending ArcelorMittal’s rights to 2050 (renewable +25 years), obliging a US$200m payment to the government for the mining-rights extension and reserved rail capacity, and setting multi-user rail access with an independently operated railway from October 2030.

Total AML investment in Liberia now stands at US$3.5bn, the largest FDI in Liberia’s post-war economy, and the deal anchors Monrovia’s wider US$4.8bn mining-and-energy pipeline (with Ivanhoe Atlantic’s iron-ore entry).

Value: US$1.8bn project; US$200m payment to the state; US$3.5bn total invested (verified against public announcements).
